Upgraded Blog

November 19th, 2008

Hey everyone,

I’ve upgraded this blog a little.

- Took out the ads.

- Put in Qik streaming box.

- Put in the Friendfeed box.

I used to update my blog skin every 6 months but I’m kinda slowing down on that now.

Instead I just put up incremental changes.

The main aim of this blog upgrade is to have Friendfeed so you can see contextual changes in the network.

And also Qik streaming. However that is still rather weak because I only have blurry test videos on it.

But watch for it!

Why People Hire Through Their University Alumni Networks

November 13th, 2008

I now understand why people hire through Alumni.

I was looking through a whole bunch of resumes last night.

And when you start seeing people from various unknown to you Universities, you start wondering what was their University experience like?

From my recent SEA trip, I’ve seen that Universities come in all shapes and sizes.

I must say that in Singapore, we’re really lucky to have public universities that are so well-funded. If not one of the best funded in the world… (Outside of the Middle East).

So even if you have to look beyond the infrastructural surface of the regional universities, you start thinking about what is the curriculum, academic standards, culture, student life of this universities.

Which is why when executives go for safety, they look to hire people who come out from the same mould: they look for their alumni members.

Because they’ve been through the system and they know what it is like. This cuts away a lot of thinking.

Now when it comes to entrepreneurship or venture capital, we know that it is dominated mainly by the White Boys Club from Stanford and Harvard. And maybe Berkeley.

Well I guess this is the reason why.

And if Singapore really wants to make long-term plans to push into the top ranks of these industry, it really needs to develop cadres of successsful Alumni after another who can subsequently help their juniors to be successful too.

Of course, great ideas but always very difficult to execute and susceptible to so much chance and luck out there!
